Approach, Technique, and Appreciation
APPROACH
I always search for ways to enhance the work with lighting, color, and composition. Background must complement the subject and provide a pleasing atmosphere. If warranted and possible, it is always advisable for the finished painting to convey a story to peak viewer interest.
TECHNIQUE
I’ve chosen pastel as my medium due to its immediacy and true color representation. It is a remarkably stable medium where colors do not alter in any way over time.
My work involves a meticulous attention to detail in an attempt to depict a portrait, landscape, or wildlife in a most realistic setting.
APPRECIATION
My father was an art director, so many of my memories are framed in references of sketches, composition, and conversation at the kitchen table. His work lived in our house, and I remember his drafting table and taboret filled with pencils and pastels he used.
The influence was there but remained dormant until I went to college and one day studying for midterms I began sketching from a picture of Paul McCartney from the White Album. To my amazement, it showed promise.
That accomplishment began my art journey. I can’t begin to explain how it all comes together in my work, but I am so grateful to my dad and most importantly to my Father in heaven who I always ask for help to guide me through each work.
